1. Pain and tension drain our energy.
Tense muscles require a lot of energy. Over time, those muscles can develop trigger points, little pockets of inflammation that can cause pain. Pain can lead to changes in our movement patterns (walking, lifting, bending) which can cause more tension and pain. See where I'm going with this? Massage is focused time to tune into your body, release tension and reclaim your energy.
2. Massage increases oxytocin. Oxytocin is good stuff.
Oxytocin is quite possibly the most popular hormone ever- and for good reason. Oxytocin can even repair the inflammatory damage of elevated stress hormones like cortisol.

Every time we practice relaxation (deep breathing, meditation, certain forms of yoga, massage), we are strengthening our Relaxation Response, a physiological shift away from the sympathetic, or "Fight, Flight or Freeze," aspect of the nervous system, and into the parasympathetic, also known as the "Rest and Digest" system. These systems work in conjunction along a continuum and many of us spend quite a bit more time towards the Fight, Flight or Freeze end of the spectrum. During a massage, your body and mind have the opportunity to move along the continuum to access deep relaxation and healing, which actually creates new connections in your brain so that deep relaxation is easier to access on a daily basis.
